Whether you are a first-time parent, or your family is growing, the journey can be so joyous, yet so overwhelming. There was a time when it was the norm for the entire community to gather and rally around a new parent during such a transformational time in one’s life. From cooking meals to doing household chores, everyone had their special offering, and it was the standard for the entire family to be supported.

Over the years, times have changed and gone are the days when we have the village that our ancestors had. That’s where a postpartum doula comes in. A postpartum doula provides that sense of community by bringing compassion, knowledge, and unwavering support during the postpartum period.

Emotional Support

The postpartum period can be quite the emotional roller coaster. The ups may look like experiencing your child look you in the eyes and smile for the first time and some of the downs may be the sleepless nights and grief of a past version of yourself. A postpartum doula is there to hold space for you by being a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on while you navigate this new chapter of life. Most importantly, postpartum doulas are trained to recognize the signs of postpartum anxiety and depression and can provide resources to assist, giving you one less task to worry about.

Postpartum Doula Services

Everyday responsibilities seem to naturally pile up when you are adjusting to welcoming a new addition to your family. A postpartum doula is there to help with those practical tasks like meal prep, light household chores, and caring for your newborn while you get caught up on rest. We’re here to make your life easier so you can focus on bonding with your baby.

There is so much new information to learn when becoming a parent that you can become overloaded with information and become uncertain. As your postpartum doula, we can offer educational guidance to help you feel empowered to choose what works best for you and your family.

Personalized Support Tailored to Your Needs

One of the most valued benefits of working with a postpartum doula is being able to customize support to fit your needs in the best way possible. Just as every person is different and has different life experiences, no two postpartum experiences are the same. Our goal is to help you own your experience and feel empowered to navigate your new role with the necessary tools to be successful.

How to Find the Right Postpartum Doula for Your Family

Here are a few tips to consider when searching for the right doula to fit your needs:

Get Started Early: It’s important to give yourself ample time to find the best doula for your postpartum experience. I recommend starting early in your pregnancy to ensure you find the person that feels right for you. This will give you the chance to relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy knowing you have invested in your postpartum plan.

Get Recommendations: You can check in with family, friends, even healthcare providers to get recommendations about postpartum doulas. Also, you can search online directories, such as the one provided by DONA, to find certified doulas in your community.

Consider Your Budget: Some doulas charge hourly for their service while others may have an all-inclusive, flat fee. With either option, rates may vary. Take some time to think about what you plan to spend and be prepared to discuss this with potential doulas. The main thing to consider is if the doula is providing the services that align with what you and your family needs.

Interview Potential Doulas: It’s a great idea to interview a few doulas to see if they would be a good match. Something to consider discussing would be their specific approach to postpartum care. Before your interview, it would be helpful to sit down and plan what questions you want to ask so that you can choose the right doula for you.

The fourth trimester is one of the most challenging, but exciting times you may experience. I believe having a postpartum doula will provide you and your family with the hands-on, emotional, and educational support that will be needed to successfully navigate the transition with ease and confidence. If you are feeling uncertain or overwhelmed as you walk into parenthood, consider hiring a postpartum doula to help you on such a beautiful journey!

Introduction

Many would describe the time after having a baby to be super exciting. There are so many new things that come along with having a baby that there is no way to be completely prepared. Whether you are a person who likes to plan, or you tend to be spontaneous, there are a few challenges that arise during the postpartum period that are quite unexpected. Even though you can’t prevent all the challenges, you CAN have a plan.

Why You Need a Postpartum Plan

During the postpartum recovery period, or the fourth trimester, you and your family will go through so many unpredictable changes. From adapting to your new sleep schedule to adjusting to changes in relationships, there are many challenges that may come up. Many times, the biggest challenge is trying to plan for how you will take care of yourself, your partner, or the rest of your family unit while you incorporate a new routine of taking care of a newborn. The main goal of this time is to be able to heal from childbirth and maintain your overall well-being all while experiencing one of the most impactful times of your life.

I truly believe that stressful moments are easier to manage if you have a solid plan. A postpartum doula is such a helpful resource to assist with creating a plan that works best for you holistically. We are trained to assess where you may need the most assistance and help tailor a plan to empower you to take charge of your postpartum experience.

Key Elements of a Postpartum Plan

Physical Recovery

The most important area to prioritize outside of the care of your newborn is your own physical recovery. There is a need to recover physically whether you have a c-section or a vaginal delivery. Recovery extends beyond your 6-week postpartum follow up visit. A major part of your recovery will include getting an appropriate amount of rest and a diet packed with the nutrients for healing. There is a certain level of planning necessary to ensure your physical needs are met even when you are focused on caring for your new baby.

Infant Care

Very similar to the postpartum period, babies can be unpredictable, as well. The day in the life of a caregiver to an infant will most likely include feeding (whether breastfeeding, bottle-feeding or exclusive pumping), diapering, bathing and a sleep schedule that works best for the parents and the baby. Since many things can quickly change as your baby grows, its beneficial to remain flexible and adjust your plan as needed.

Emotional and Mental Health Support

It’s important to recognize that postpartum depression and anxiety are very common and can affect anyone during the fourth trimester. Addressing these issues early on can positively impact your well-being, healing, and ability to care for your baby. Emotional support during this time ensures you have the resources you need to feel supported during the challenges that can occur with the postpartum period.

New parents should plan ways that they want to be supported emotionally during their postpartum journey. This will look different for every individual, but it could include tools such as counseling, online and in-person support groups, and regular check ins with a healthcare provider to discuss any mental health concerns.

Partner and Family Support

In the whirlwind of the postpartum journey, partners and family members can be your greatest allies. Involving them in your postpartum plan isn’t only about having extra hands, but about sharing the load and feeling supported. Open communication is key – talk about what you really need and don’t be afraid to let them know how they can help. You may want to take turns with night feedings, handling household chores, or just a shoulder to lean on and having a clear plan makes the transition smooth for everybody involved. Remember you don’t have to do it all alone and it is okay to advocate for yourself and ask for help!

Household Management

Managing household responsibilities with a newborn can feel like juggling a million things at once, but there are so many ways to make it easier. Meal prep before the baby arrives can be such a lifesaver. Also, tackling small cleaning tasks when you can or making sure someone is assigned to help with walks or feeding pets are other ways to make your transition easier. These are all things to consider when your family and friends are asking how they can help or something to keep in mind when interview postpartum doulas.

Your Postpartum Plan

During pregnancy, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but starting your postpartum planning early can help reduce stress and set you up for a smoother transition. Involve your support network by clearly communicating your needs and expectations with your partner, family, and friends. Be realistic about what you can handle and remember that your plan doesn’t have to be rigid. Don’t forget to tap into the many resources available. Start planning today and build the plan you need to thrive during your postpartum journey!

As a postpartum doula, one of the most common questions I have gotten from new parents is about sleep. Specifically, parents are curious about what they can do to help their baby to get longer stretches of sleep. Infant sleep patterns can be interesting and hard to figure out, especially when you are a new, sleep-deprived parent. Understanding these patterns and how to work with them can make an incredible difference.

Newborn Sleep: What to Expect

Babies require a lot of sleep – typically around 14 to 17 hours daily – but these hours are far from the uninterrupted stretches that adults are used to. Infant sleep cycles are shorter, lasting between 50 and 60 minutes at a time. They tend to wake up frequently to feed, especially during the few couple months of life.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect with newborn sleep in the beginning:

Frequent Interruptions: In the early weeks, babies tend to wake up every 2 to 3 hours to eat. This is normal and necessary for their growth.

Shorter Sleep Cycles: We mentioned before that newborn sleep cycles are much shorter than adults. Additionally, they often alternate between light and deep sleep. They spend most of their sleep cycle in the lighter, active sleep cycle.

Day-Night Confusion: Newborns are not born knowing the difference between day and night, so it’s not uncommon for them to get the two confused.

Tips for Helping Babies Get More Rest

Now that we understand more about why newborns have different sleep cycles, let’s explore how we can navigate it during the postpartum period.

Create a Proper Sleep Environment: It will be beneficial to create an environment that fosters rest and limits day-night confusion. Consider diming lights and swaddling to recreate an environment like the womb.

Feed Your Baby on Demand: It’s important to feed your baby when they are showing signs of hunger. This will assist them with meeting their weight milestones and help keep them full for more quality sleep.

Establish a Routine: It is never too early to start a bedtime routine. A routine will help your baby know that it is bedtime. This might include a warm bath, reading a story, turning down the lights with soft white noise, and a bedtime feeding.

Encourage Daytime Wakefulness: There are a few things you can do to increase wakefulness during the day. During the day, it would be most helpful to keep the environment bright and stimulating, even during naps.

Be Flexible: It is essential to remember that your baby’s sleep patterns are forever growing as they grow and develop. It’s not uncommon to experience a change in sleep patterns just as you start to feel like you have a routine established. Be patient and flexible to adjust as your baby grows.

When to Get Help

Although sleep challenges are common, if you are consistently running into trouble getting your baby to sleep or you’re starting to become overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to seek help. After checking with your baby’s pediatrician, a postpartum doula or newborn sleep specialist can offer guidance and support.

Challenges with newborns and their sleep pattern is not uncommon. However, there are tools that you can use to help you and your baby to establish a routine that works best for you. You don’t have to navigate this part of journey alone; I’m here to support you and your family!
